Travel from Paro through Thimphu and Punakha before continuing into the serene Gangtey region, where wide open valleys, mountain views and traditional Bhutanese life create a very different experience from the country’s more popular cultural routes.

This carefully paced itinerary brings together Buddhist heritage, Himalayan viewpoints, countryside drives, nature walks and authentic village experiences. Explore Thimphu, cross the scenic Dochula Pass, discover Punakha’s cultural treasures and continue into the Gangtey–Phobjikha region for its tranquil landscapes and rural character.

The highlight is your time in Phobjikha Valley, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful highland valleys. Visit Gangtey Monastery, walk through the valley and surrounding countryside, and enjoy opportunities to observe local wildlife and traditional village life. During the appropriate winter season, the valley also offers the chance to experience the arrival of the Black-necked Cranes, a special wildlife experience associated with Phobjikha.

Designed for travellers seeking more than conventional sightseeing, this journey combines nature, culture, wellness, photography and slow travel into one premium Bhutan experience.

Arrive at Paro International Airport, where you will be welcomed and assisted before beginning your journey into Bhutan.

Drive through the Himalayan countryside towards Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. The journey introduces you to the country’s mountain scenery, traditional architecture and peaceful way of life.

After reaching Thimphu, check in and enjoy time to relax after your journey. Depending on arrival time, you may take a gentle walk around the city or explore the local surroundings at your own pace.

After breakfast, explore the cultural and scenic highlights of Thimphu.

Visit Buddha Dordenma, one of the city’s most impressive landmarks, set high above the valley with expansive views across Thimphu.

Continue to the Memorial Chorten, an important religious landmark, followed by Tashichho Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most significant architectural and administrative complexes.

Later, explore the city’s traditional character and local surroundings. You may also enjoy time for handicraft shopping or a relaxed café experience.

Optional: Visit additional local attractions depending on your interests and available time.

After breakfast, leave Thimphu and travel towards Punakha through the spectacular Himalayan landscape.

The journey takes you to Dochula Pass, one of Bhutan’s most scenic mountain viewpoints. On clear days, the pass offers magnificent Himalayan panoramas, while the surrounding landscape provides excellent opportunities for photography and quiet moments in nature.

Continue towards Punakha through changing mountain scenery, forests and traditional settlements.

Upon arrival, settle into your accommodation and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Punakha Valley.

Optional: Take a short countryside walk or explore the surrounding area depending on conditions.

After breakfast, continue towards Gangtey and Phobjikha Valley, moving deeper into Bhutan’s peaceful highland countryside.

The drive itself is part of the experience, with mountain roads, forested slopes, Himalayan viewpoints and traditional villages along the way.

On arrival in the Phobjikha region, visit Gangtey Monastery, an important spiritual and cultural landmark overlooking the valley.

Continue into Phobjikha Valley, where the landscape opens into broad meadows surrounded by mountains. Enjoy a slower afternoon away from the busier tourist routes.

Take time to appreciate the valley’s scenery, traditional homes and rural atmosphere.

Today is dedicated to experiencing the natural beauty of Phobjikha Valley at a relaxed pace.

After breakfast, enjoy a nature walk through the valley and surrounding countryside, taking in mountain scenery, pine forests, open meadows and traditional Bhutanese settlements.

The day is intentionally less structured, allowing you to experience the landscape rather than simply pass through it.

Explore traditional villages and enjoy opportunities to see Bhutanese rural life up close. Your guide can also introduce you to local traditions, architecture and the relationship between the valley’s communities and its natural environment.

Seasonal Black-necked Crane Experience: During the winter migration season, Phobjikha becomes a special destination for observing Black-necked Cranes. Wildlife sightings are naturally subject to season, weather and animal movement.

Optional: Additional short nature walks or village experiences can be arranged depending on conditions and interests.

After breakfast, begin your scenic journey back towards Paro.

Enjoy the changing Himalayan landscapes as you leave the peaceful Gangtey region and travel towards western Bhutan. Along the route, there will be opportunities to stop at suitable viewpoints and rural settlements for photography and short breaks.

The journey offers another perspective of Bhutan’s countryside, with mountain roads, forests, valleys and traditional villages forming the backdrop.

On reaching Paro, check in and enjoy a relaxed evening. You may explore Paro town, browse local handicrafts or simply unwind after the scenic drive.

After breakfast, prepare for one of Bhutan’s most iconic experiences — the hike to Taktsang Monastery, popularly known as Tiger’s Nest.

Set dramatically on a cliffside above the Paro Valley, Tiger’s Nest is one of Bhutan’s most famous cultural and spiritual landmarks. The journey combines mountain scenery, forest trails and one of the country’s most memorable viewpoints.

After returning to Paro, enjoy time to relax.

Later, explore Paro Dzong and the surrounding historic area, experiencing the distinctive architecture and cultural character of the Paro Valley.

The evening is free for a relaxed final experience in Bhutan.
