The Deccan region is an interesting piece of geography that has been an attraction for people even during the ancient times. You can find many natural attractions, monuments, interesting spots and much more here. The specialty of this place has made it to be a part of the itineraries of the luxury train, Deccan Odyssey. This itinerary covers all important destinations in the Deccan region like Mumbai, Bijapur, Aihol, Pattadakal, Hampi, Hyderabad, Ajanta, Ellora and others. The trip stretches for seven nights and eight days. The trip starts and ends in Mumbai.
DAY 01: MUMBAI
The tour officially starts by 3:30 pm at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The registration process begins on time. After registration, the traditional Indian welcome starts which includes a welcome drink. You would be led to your cabin and the train slowly moves towards Bijapur. The rest of the day is free to explore the train and its amenities. Dinner is served on board an overnight stay in the train.
DAY 02: BIJAPUR
Start your day with an onboard breakfast as the Deccan Odyssey train reaches Bijapur, which is the historic capital of the Sultans of Deccan. Explore the Palaces, mosques, and monuments. It was established back during 10th and 11th by the Kalyani Chalukyas. During the second half of 16th and early 17th century under the Adil Shahi dynasty, Bijapur gained an important position in the country and became one of the most celebrated cities of India. After breakfast in the train, you will be taken on a sightseeing tour, which includes important destinations like Gol Gumbaz which is the second largest tomb in the world. This mausoleum of Adil Shah, the Sultan of Bijapur, is a magnificent testimony of the architectural triumph of Deccan architecture. The key attraction of the mausoleum is a circular gallery where a little whisper gets magnified. Next, proceed for the Jama Masjid which is renowned as one of the first mosque in India. Visit the Malik e Maidan which is the largest medieval cannon in the world. It is believed that those people who touch the cannon and make a wish, their wish comes true. Vist Mehtar Mahal, a 17th-century ornamental gateway to a mosque. Later, start driving to Ibraham Rouza which is one of the graceful Islamic monuments in India. The structure has 24m high minarets which are inspired by the Taj Mahal. The tour ends by late afternoon and you will be taken back to the train for lunch. Rest of the day is free for you to enjoy the train or relax. Dinner is served on board and overnight stay in the train.
DAY 03: AIHOLE PATTADAKAL
After breakfast on the train, you will be taken on a temple-filled sightseeing tour in Aihole and Pattadakal. One of the world’s largest temple complexes and are well-known for displaying Indian architecture. You will be visiting a group of rock-cut temples that were constructed by the Chalukyan kings in different styles to ensure that each temple is different from the other temples of India. There are 70 rock-cut temples and you are free to explore the region. Later, move to Pattadakal, located on the banks of the Malaprabha River. You will be taken back to the train for lunch. After lunch, you can either choose an optional sightseeing tour in Guledgud. You can visit the weaving village, buy clothes and souvenirs. Alternatively, you can choose to take the sightseeing trip of Badami to enjoy rock-cut temple, sculptures and others. You will be taken back to the train by late evening. Dinner is served on board and overnight stay in the train. The train moves to Hampi.
DAY 04: HAMPI
After breakfast in the train, you will be taken to the iconic tourist attraction, the ruined ancient city of Hampi, UNESCO World Heritage Site. Proceed to visit the Narasimha statue and enjoy sightseeing around. You can find many rock-cut monuments, ancient temples and others here. Later, you will be taken to Mustard Ganesh at the foot of Hamkuta Hills. You can explore the riverbank of Tungabadra. After visiting Virupaksha temple and Vittala temple. Virupaksha temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And, the Vittala temple is one of the most popular attractions of Hampi. It is well-known as an architectural showpiece of Hampi. You will be taken back to Hospet for lunch onboard the Deccan Odyssey. After lunch, you will be taken to visit the Royal Center of Hampi where you can spot the Queen’s Bath, Steeped Tank, Mahanavami Dibba, where a ramp is present to reach its summit, the Hazara Rama Temple. Also, visit the Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables and others. Later, you will be taken back to the train by late evening. Dinner is served on board and overnight stay in the train. The train slowly moves to Hyderabad. You will be taken back to the train by evening. Dinner will be served on board as the train moves towards Tadoba. Overnight stay in the train.
DAY 05: HYDERABAD
By morning, you would reach the land of Biriyani, Hyderabad. Bhagyanagar is the old city in Hyderabad which is the commercial hub and well-known for preserving the rich heritage and culture of India. The destination is the perfect place for foodies as the city has more options to offer when it comes to food. After breakfast, you will be taken on a sightseeing trip to Golconda, the epitome of Nizami culture and grandeur. You will be taken to a fort of Qutub Shahi dynasty. After exploring Golconda, you will be taken back to the train for lunch. After lunch, you can take an optional tour to Hyderabad for shopping souvenirs where you can buy pearls, lac bangles and oil based fragrances or “ittars”. Enjoy shopping and taste the signature Hyderabad Biriyani. Post lunch, you will be taken for a traditional tea at Falaknuma Palace was built by Nawab Vikar-ul-Umra, prime minister of Hyderabad. Later, you will be taken on a sightseeing tour in Hyderabad, Charminar. It was built by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah for fulfilling his vow of building a mosque if the plague epidemic that hit the city stopped. Buy local jewellery and visit the famous Pather Gatti. You will be taken back to the train by late evening for dinner and rest. Overnight stay in the train. The train runs to Aurangabad.
DAY 06: AURANGABAD ELLORA CAVES
You will reach Aurangabad. It is the industrial place which is located in Maharashtra that has been named after the last Great Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Tourists will be taken on a sightseeing tour to Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Aurangabad is famous for historic monuments that take influences from the Mughal Era. Few popular monuments of the city include Daulatabad Fort, Bibi-ka-Makbara and the city’s 52 gates. Enjoy your breakfast onboard the Deccan Odyssey and then drive towards to the Ellora Caves. The caves are considered one of the best example of cave-temple architecture in India. You will be visiting rock-cut temples, artworks, caves, and others. The main part of the sightseeing trip is the Kailash temple. You will be taken back to the train for lunch and the rest of the day is free. In the evening, relax with your favorite cocktails onboard fixed by our bartender. You can enjoy the amenities inside the train as the Deccan Odyssey moves towards Ajanta caves. Dinner on board an overnight stay in the train.
DAY 07: AJANTA CAVES
The train reaches Jalgaon station by early morning. After breakfast, you will be taken to the Ajanta caves to enjoy ancient sculptures; rock cut temples, caves temples, and other architectural marvels. You will be taken back to the train for lunch. After a brief rest, you will be taken to Mahatma Gandhi memorial. In the evening, you will be taken to enjoy the rural parts of the place. By late evening, you will be taken back to the train for dinner and overnight stay. The train moves slowly towards Mumbai, the last destination.
DAY 08: MUMBAI
The train reaches Mumbai by early morning. After breakfast, the checkout formalities start. The train halts at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. You can travel to the nearest airport for your departure flight or stay back in Mumbai and enjoy the city.
